About Bath Junior Chess Club

Bath Junior Chess: Founded in 2011 by chess educator and mentor Ferdo Dizdarevic. It has become one of the region’s most respected junior chess organisations, inspiring young players to develop confidence, strategic thinking, and a lifelong love of the game.

Working closely with Chess in Schools and Communities, the club has introduced chess to hundreds of children across the local area, helping students of all ages discover the educational and social benefits of the game.

Ferdo is passionate about making chess accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background. One of the club’s most successful initiatives was the “Chess Mates” programme, created in partnership with Age UK. Built around the belief that “you are never too old to learn,” the programme brought together schoolchildren and elderly residents through regular chess sessions. Pupils from Widcombe Junior School visited pensioners aged between 82 and 94, creating meaningful friendships across generations while sharing a love of chess.

Beyond schools and community groups, Ferdo has also supported rehabilitation programmes through chess coaching sessions with inmates at HMP Elsworth, demonstrating how the game can encourage patience, discipline, and positive personal development.

In addition to beginner and development coaching, Bath Junior Chess runs an invitation-only elite training group for exceptionally talented young players, helping nurture the next generation of competitive chess talent. Over the years, the club has seen a significant rise in players qualifying for the higher stages of the UK Chess Challenge Terafinals, with students regularly competing in local, regional, and national tournaments.

Today, Bath Junior Chess continues to provide an encouraging and inclusive environment where young people can build skills, friendships, and confidence both on and off the chessboard.

What We Believe

Chess is for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re 6 or 94, a complete beginner or a competition regular, the game has something to offer you.
